The
Last Station (15) Saturday 9th October 2010
Run time 112 minutes
An all-star cast including Helen Mirren, Christopher Plummer, James McAvoy,
Paul Giamatti and Kerry Condon feature in this period love story set in the
last year of the life of Leo Tolstoy. Tolstoy (Plummer) struggles to balance
fame and wealth with his commitment to a life devoid of material things, and
finds himself increasingly at odds with his wife Sofya (Mirren). As his devoted
disciple Chertkov (Giametti) urges him to sign a new will leaving the rights
to his work to the Russian people rather than his family, the conflict between
husband and wife grows to breaking point. This is witnessed by Tolstoy’s
new secretary, Bulgakov (McAvoy), whose burgeoning love for Masha (Condon)
contrasts with the tortured dynamic in Tolstoy’s marriage.
